Geshe Sherab's Biography

Geshe Thubten Sherab was born in 1967 in a small village in the Manang region of western Nepal. Hoping to create merit for their family and for all sentient beings, his parents encouraged him to become a monk. He was welcomed to Kopan Monastery by Lama Yeshe, where his formal training began.
From 1987 to 2000, Geshe Sherab studied Buddhist philosophy at Sera Je Monastery in southern India, eventually earning his Geshe degree. During these years, he was deeply influenced by his teachers, especially Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, who taught as much through their daily example as through formal instruction.
After completing his studies, Geshe Sherab spent a year studying tantra at Gyume Tantric College before coming to the United States. He then spent two and a half years supporting the FPMT International Office and teaching in Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Geshe-la later returned to Kopan Monastery to serve as headmaster and acting abbot. In 2014, he returned to Santa Fe to become the resident teacher of Thubten Norbu Ling, where he has continued teaching and supporting the community ever since.
Typically, Geshe-la spends part of each year teaching at Thubten Norbu Ling and part of the year traveling to teach at FPMT centers throughout North America and around the world. Over the years, he has become a pillar of the TNL community and a treasured source of Dharma wisdom and inspiration for students both locally and internationally.
After completing his current global teaching tour, which concludes in North America in early 2027, Geshe-la plans to fulfill a long-held aspiration by entering an extended three-year retreat. Those interested in supporting Geshe Thubten Sherab’s retreat can learn more through Thubten Norbu Ling.
